Welcome to Penang -Tips..

More than two centuries of unique history and heritage has made Penang a must visit island.Transformed from a swamp to what it is today, a modern city with old world charms , it's been home to the footprints of every adventurer, traveller and tourist since the 1700's.
Here are upcoming  events on the island :
1.13/4/2011 -Thai Water Festival - Wat Chayamangkalaram , Thai Buddhist Temple.
   23/4/2011 - Vasakhi Open House Esplanade [ HP 017 5840821 ]
   14th - 30 th May Penang Durian Fair at Anjung Indah Balik Pulau [ 04 6505136 ]

2.July / August  
St Anne's Feast in Bukit Mertajam  at the St Anne's Church.
Dragon Boat Races ( Crew Championships )
National Chingay Competition

3. September / October
The Indian Navarathri Festival
Nine Emperor Gods Festival ( Chinese)

4. Check out the 'pasar malams' . There could be one , usually one day in a week in certain areas where you get to sample some of Penang's favourite foods and get bargain buys..
On Wednesdays 4pm - 9 pm , Glugor , The Taman Tun Sardon Area.
On Fridays , Bayan Lepas [ just beside the main traffic lights at entrance to town ]

5. Flea Market - at Lorong Kulit in Datuk Keramat.

6.Balik Pulau - Mention Balik Pulau and images of  great food ,breathtaking sightings, remote beaches , rustic and traditional Malay  homes and lifestyles well up.Add to this a tranquil getaway made from recycled building materials and you are in for a refreshing all of it's own. Malihom

8.. Fishing Village  If you have the time get down to Kuala Kurau , a 40 minute drive onto the mainland, an old fishing village and next door to an exciting Bird Sanctuary where you can take boat trips on a river to view birds in their habitats [ Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary]including feeding them if you want.

9. Canopy Walkways - there's one atop Penang Hill.Hire a bicycle at the funicullar railway station to pedal down to the canopy site.For a longer thrill , head over the bridge to Sedim Park , on the way to Marang.

10. Camping ? There's a place in town [Bayan Baru] on the Bayan Mutiara/Bayan Bay stretch of beach where you can spend a good night .There are folks there who would rent out tents and other facilities for you to do this safe and sound.Enquiries can be made later in the evening on site.Fresh ,good, local halal food is plentifully available.
